j BACKGROUND

Raised the youngest of fourteen children in a family in New Jersey

Attended Syracuse University

Played baseball through his university years

 

j CAREER

Moved to New York and became a journalist

Wrote novels and short stories

Worked as a newspaper correspondent in the Greco-Turkish War in 1897 and the Spanish-American War in 1898 and contracted tuberculosis
