Civil War Mindset 1860 -1865

View of Deity
God used to justify the politics of union and sucession. Old Testament viewed as supporter of each side's values: tradition of slavery and liberator and provider of deliverance. African music fused with Protestant hymns and popular music of the day (work songs, ballads, war songs, lullabies) expressed faith.

View of People
Struggle between "accepting one's fate" and "struggling for new and better life" is seen. People supported and protested civil rights of blacks and women.

View of Society
Differences of the South and the North are highlighted. Battle for states' rights brings about a decisive end of slavery and reinforced the "unified" United States under federal control, focused in Abraham Lincoln.

View of Nature
Much destruction in the South. Thousands of lives lost in the Civil War.

View of Place in History
Domestic struggle outshines foreign concerns during this time of redefiniton of the nation.
