Art & Writing Weblog, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh Prinicipals: Charles Youngs, Christen Palombo, Mary Culberston-Stark The purpose of this project is to pilot a weblog on art experiences over time with contemporary art on exhibition at the Carnegie Museum of Art from May 2007 until November 2008. The process and product of this project was used to develop a interscholastic weblog project for the 2008 Carnegie International Exhibition.
Effectiveness in Weblogs to Engage Reader-Response in the Secondary Classroom Principal Investigator: Nicole Roth, Duquesne University Participant Observers: Charles Youngs, Michael Bellini
The purpose of this case study, undertaken from September 2006 to March 2007, was to observe and look for evidence of efficacy of blogging in high school students using weblog technology versus word-processing versus handwriting. Questions guiding the study: (1) Is there evidence in heightened engagement in dialogue among students and between students and teachers? (2) How does the use of weblogs influence student engagement in reading literary texts? (3) What affect does blogging have on students versus other ways of journaling? Results: The study, which concluded in a successful doctoral defense by Roth, indicated a higher proficiency in writing of students who journaled using blogging versus the control groups. Participant researchers presented at 2006 NCTE annual convention and propose to report results at the 2007 convention.
COMPLETED RESEARCH PROJECT
Process Drama in the Literary Classroom: Action, Theory, and Practice Principal Investigator and Participant Observer: Charles Youngs Independent Observer: Betsy Craig
The purpose of this study was to gain insight from experts (Cecily O’Neill, B.J. Wagner) in the field of process drama and put these in practice in a twelfth grade course. Process drama techniques were utilized in instructional units of four modern novels. Findings suggested that the methodology does facilitate effective learning in literary study.
